Hear, Hear! How to Take Care of Your Ears and Hearing

Medical experts say prolonged exposure to loud music has the potential to bring about permanent hearing loss. This includes listening to loud music frequently, or on a daily basis, using headphones or ear buds.   • Mixed – As its name implies, it is a case of hearing loss where both symptoms and causes of conductive and sensorineural hearing losses are present. In most cases of mixed hearing loss, a damage in the outer or middle ear has affected the auditory nerve located in the inner ear.

To avoid permanent hearing loss, taking care of your sense of hearing and your ears is vital. Here are some tips that can help you curb the risk of losing your hearing permanently.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to loud music and noise – The World Health Organization says 1.1 billion people worldwide are prone to having noise-induced hearing loss due to listening to loud music via audio devices. At the most, listen to music through devices for 60 minutes a day and with the volume at a maximum of 60 percent. Experts say headphones are the lesser evil as ear buds are directly inserted into the ear and closer to the ear drum.
  • Wear ear plugs – If you are working in a place where being exposed to deafening noises is inevitable, be sure to wear ear plugs to protect your ears.
  • Rest your ears – Give your ears a period of rest from all the noise. For example, if you are at a bar where extremely loud music is being played, allot time to step outside so your ears can rest.
